Immigrants Must Pass History Test To Earn UK Passport: Exam Will Cover Everything From Boudica To Churchill

Migrants will have to pass a quiz on British history and culture to receive a UK passport, David Cameron announced yesterday.

In a wide-ranging plan to ‘get a grip’ on our borders, the Prime Minister also urged the public to report suspected illegal immigrants to Crimestoppers.

And he admitted there was ‘discomfort and tension’ in some communities over the levels of migration.

Crackdown: David Cameron urged the public to report suspected illegal immigrants to Crimestoppers in a wide-ranging plan to 'get a grip' on our borders.

Pledge: The speech contained a suggestion to consider making forced marriage illegal - an idea critics claim could leave victims less likely to come forward.

Foreign nationals wanting to settle in the UK permanently have been required to sit a multiple-choice ‘Life in the UK’ test for the past six years.

But, in a highly controversial move, Labour ministers ruled it should not include a history section because there was ‘too much and it would not be fair’.

Instead, migrants are grilled on the structure of the European Union, state benefits, equal rights and discrimination.

Yesterday, Mr Cameron said ministers would ‘revise the whole test to put British history and culture at the heart of it’.

Subjects to be covered include Roman Britain, Boudica, the Norman Conquest, Magna Carta, the Wars of the Roses, Elizabeth I, the Civil War, the Battle of Britain and Winston Churchill.

To make room, questions on the operation of the single market and on the differences between the Council of Europe, EU, European Commission and European Parliament will be dropped.

Making only his second major speech on immigration, Mr Cameron said he wanted to bring much-needed ‘fairness’ to the system.

‘While it’s crude and wrong to say immigrants come to Britain and take all our jobs, there’s no doubt that badly controlled immigration has compounded the failure of our welfare system and allowed governments and employers to carry on with the waste of people stuck on welfare when they should be working,’ he said.

The Prime Minister said that – in order to meet his promise to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands – the Government had to crack down on student visas, work visas, marriage, settlement and illegal immigration.

There were also proposals to make migrants pay a bond, possibly of thousands of pounds, before they are allowed to enter the UK. This would work to stop them disappearing into the black economy.

Plans were also unveiled to crack down on any migrant who owes the NHS £1,000 or more for non-emergency treatment.

They will either not be allowed a visa – preventing them from getting any follow-up treatment – or refused a renewal of their permission to stay.

Officials estimate the proposal to tackle ‘health tourism’ could save £20million over five years. The rules will not be applied retrospectively.

The speech contained a pledge to consider making forced marriage illegal – an idea critics claim could leave victims less likely to come forward.

A move to make firms count the number of foreign staff they employ was abandoned. Mr Cameron drew direct links between the culture of welfarism in Britain and the fact so many foreign workers, such as hard-working Poles, had secured jobs.

Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said: ‘Another week, another rewritten speech from the Prime Minister. Yesterday Downing Street said David Cameron would require companies to publish lists of foreign employees, and within 24 hours it has been dropped.

Six Arrested After Three Girls, All 15, 'Gang Raped' In Ipswich Flat

Police investigating the gang rape of three 15-year-old girls have arrested three teenagers and three men, officers said tonight.

The girls were subjected to the brutal attack in a town centre flat in Ipswich, Suffolk, in the early hours of yesterday.

Officers were called to the property shortly after 3am, when a friend of one of the victims raised the alarm.

Attack: The gang rape occurred in a flat in Ipswich town centre.

A police spokeswoman has now confirmed that six people, including three teenagers, have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Detectives have not elaborated on details of the brutal attack, or how the men were able to enter the flat.

A police spokesman said the victims did not know their attackers and the men had not been invited into the flat.

'Suffolk Police are at present dealing with a number of allegations of rape at a property in Ipswich,' the spokesman said.

'Officers were called at just after 3am this morning, Friday 26 August by a friend of one of the victims and a scene is currently in place at the property.

'Three female victims, all aged 15 years old, are being spoken to and given assistance by specially trained officers this morning.

'A police pod has been set up for concerned residents to talk to officers.'

The three girls have been interviewed by specially-trained officers but did not need hospital treatment, the spokesman added.

Earlier today, a 19-year-old man from Ipswich was arrested on suspicion of rape and possession of cannabis while another 19-year-old and a 17-year-old were also arrested on suspicion of rape.

They were interviewed at the Ipswich Police Investigation Centre before being bailed this evening and ordered to return on October 13 pending further inquiries.

And this evening police confirmed that three more arrests have now been made.

A spokesman for Suffolk Constabulary said: 'Police investigating after receiving allegations that three teenage girls were raped have made three further arrests.

'Three men, one aged 25 and two aged 20 have been taken into custody where they will be interviewed by detectives.'

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Luckett said: 'This is a very serious offence and officers from the Major Investigation Team are working closely with colleagues to find out exactly what happened and who was involved.

'The victims are currently receiving support from police and partner agencies through the Sexual Assault Referral Centre.

'This appears to be an isolated incident and we would like to reassure members of the public that these types of offences are extremely unusual, both in Suffolk and nationally.'

Forensic teams were at the flat today.

Pensioner Found Murdered At Home

A pensioner was discovered murdered at her home in a quiet Northumberland market town after her handbag was found dumped 23 miles away.

Police cordoned off St Wilfrid's Road, Hexham, Northumberland, after 77-year-old Judith Richardson was found dead in a property, having suffered head injuries.

Police found the body of 77-year-old Judith Richardson at her house in Hexham, close to the town's historic abbey. She had suffered severe head injuries.

Miss Richardson's body was discovered after a member of the public found a discarded handbag in a bin in Newcastle upon Tyne city centre, half an hour's drive from the town.

Police investigated the contents, which led them to Mrs Richardson's address in St Wilfrid's Road, at around 6.45pm on Friday.

It is believed she had been bludgeoned to death with a weapon.

Detectives are investigating whether the handbag was abandoned after being stolen from Mrs Richardson's home during a violent burglary.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Young, of Northumbria Police, said: "What I will suggest is that the evidence indicates that there has been some kind of motive of either robbery or burglary.

"She appeared to have had injuries, but I wouldn't like to say what weapon was used."

DCI Young added: "We are working tirelessly to establish the exact circumstances and find those responsible.

"We ask anyone who may have been in the area at the time or witnessed any suspicious behaviour to contact police immediately.

"All information is crucial to us, no matter how insignificant you may think. We want to reassure the community that this appears to be an isolated incident and we do have visible officers on the beat in and around the Hexham area."

DCI Young said there were no signs of forced entry at the address. He added that Miss Richardson had been spotted on Friday morning walking her dog.

A force spokeswoman said: "At this stage it appears she had suffered a head injury."

A post mortem examination will be carried out on Sunday.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
